How state income tax works
State income tax is separate from federal income tax. You pay both — federal tax goes to the IRS, state tax goes to your state government. The amount varies dramatically depending on where you live.
Nine states charge no income tax at all: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. On the other end, California's top rate reaches 13.3% on income over $1 million.
Most states use a progressive system similar to federal brackets, though a handful use a flat rate. This calculator uses an effective rate for each state to give you a quick estimate of your liability.
What you need to know
SALT deduction cap. You can deduct state and local taxes on your federal return, but only up to $10,000 per year. If you live in a high-tax state like California or New York, you'll hit this cap quickly.
No-tax states aren't always cheaper. States without income tax often make up the revenue through higher property taxes or sales taxes. Texas has no income tax but charges 1.68% in property taxes on average — one of the highest in the country.
Local taxes exist too. Some cities levy their own income tax on top of state tax. New York City adds up to 3.876%, while Philadelphia charges 3.75%. This calculator covers state-level tax only.
Frequently asked questions
Which states have no income tax?
Nine states: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. New Hampshire previously taxed interest and dividends but phased that out in 2025.
Which state has the highest income tax?
California has the highest top marginal rate at 13.3% on income above $1 million. Hawaii (11%), New Jersey (10.75%) and Oregon (9.9%) also have high top rates.
Can I deduct state taxes on my federal return?
Yes, but the SALT deduction is capped at $10,000 per year. This cap was introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2018 and remains in effect through 2025.
Do I pay state tax where I live or where I work?
Generally you pay state income tax where you earn the income. If you live in one state and work in another, you may owe tax in both, though most states offer credits to avoid double taxation.
Can I save money by moving to a no-tax state?
Potentially, but consider the full picture. No-tax states often have higher property or sales taxes. Compare total tax burden, not just income tax.
Do some cities charge their own income tax?
Yes. New York City charges up to 3.876% on top of state tax. Philadelphia, Detroit, Columbus and Kansas City also levy local income taxes. This calculator shows state-level tax only.
